Spring cleaning the house is easy. Spring cleaning life is tough.

The sun rose this morning in Cardiff at 6:10am, I on the other hand was awake by 5:04am. Outside my house was a symphony of bird song. Now you’d expect that in the countryside, but I live in the middle of the city. It was so loud I thought I’d left the window open!

Another wonderful reason why I love spring. The bird song, the lighter nights, the slightly warmer weather (I’ve started wearing my lighter coat) and the brightness of the sunshine. It all signals a shift. A new season of growth and positivity.

As we said previously, this Saturday just gone was the first day of spring. I love this weekend in the yearly calendar as I get to spring clean. Don’t you agree? Am I the only one that thinks there is something satisfying about spring cleaning?

Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful. William Morris

I don’t know if it’s the physical activity or the wonderful fresh clean smells, or being very organised but I love it. If we think about this from a business point of view…many business books extol the virtues of a tidy environment to help you be more focused, productive, and well successful.

This year was twice as fun, as I got to also spring clean the newer, larger office. Here are some of my spring clean your business/office ideas.

1. Start by giving it a good clean.

  • Mentally block your office in parts to clean it. Start by cleaning/ re-organising the cupboards in the right corner of your office - it will make cleaning the office less daunting.

  • Clean your desk - this includes any folders, notes, pieces of paper, pen pots.

    • To keep your desk clutter-free assess what you use on a daily and keep only that on your desk!

    • Make sure you disinfect the desk itself/ your computer.

2. Consider rearranging your office space

  • A change in the office can help make you become more productive - not in the same routine, stimulate your brain.

  • See if you can move around your desk and file cupboards.

3. Freshen up your office. Add a splash of colour.

  • Update photos, trinkets any achievements you have and add colour or plants to your office.

o Add easy to care for plants and flowers to add colour and help purify the air.

o You could swap plants for fake plants or flowers.

o Add an air purifier or if safe to do so a candle.

o Add pictures, a wall moral or paint.

4. Reorganise your files and systems

  • You do not need to have documents from 5 years ago mixed up with documents that need currently.

  • Keep some file spaces to be able to keep filing your current documents - this will prevent you from having to do a big clean up again of your files in the future.

  • Have a daily filing system. Have a magazine filing box or two to keep loose sheets etc together and help maintain a cleaner desk.

5. Detox your digital presence

  • Clean up your desktop - Your screen being messy is the same as your physical space- will still make you unproductive.

  • Audit your CRM systems and make sure you are up to date with GDPR/ICO information.

  • See if you are able to scan or digitize any of your older documents. (Put them in a digital archive.) This will help further improve your filing space.

  • Sort out your email inbox

  • Freshen up your web content/social profiles

5. Review your business goals e.g. first quarter

  • We have only got a week left in the first quarter of 2021. Now is the time to

    • Reflect on what you have achieved in the last 12 weeks

    • What did you learn? What didn’t go so well?

    • What could you have done more of?

    • Now figure out what your future goals should be and how you are going to achieve them.

I hope like me spring cleaning helps clear your mind, inspiring and re-‘NRG-ising you for the next few months. Send some photo’s of the new space/office as we’ll showcase them on our social media feeds.
