Love and Gratitude – my cure for insomnia.

Updated: Jun 8, 2020

Last night or should I say this morning I could not sleep.

Lying there I looked across at my husband and realized we were taking the ‘stay 2m meters apart’ a little too seriously. Tossing and turning for over 2 hours a little thought made me smile.

It was the same exactly 12 months ago. You see today is our 1st Wedding Anniversary and the night before we got married, I couldn’t sleep either. I smiled remembering our special day surrounded by family and friend who had travel from near and far to celebrate with us.

How times change! The world is a very different place today. (Back to the point of this digest. I’m getting lost.)

It doesn’t often happen. I generally sleep like a baby. You know me, I run around so much day after day that when my head hits the pillow, I’m asleep within a minute.

I do have a trick for when I can’t sleep. I start thinking about all the things I am thankful for. You see it turns out being grateful is good for your health, wellbeing and according to the app Gratitude Plus helps insomnia.

Gratitude increases sleep quality, reduces the time required to fall asleep, and increases sleep duration. In other words, gratitude can help with insomnia.

Many scientific studies have shown individuals who study daily gratitude also have stronger emotional health, a lower lifetime risk for depression, anxiety and substance abuse disorders. Gratitude = enhanced lifetime.

What are you grateful for?

When was the last time you remembered everything you were thankful for and everyone you were thankful to?

I practice daily gratitude. I write each day in my Daily Greatness Journal. Why not try it for a week and see how you feel. It might not feel like it now, but we really have so much to be thankful for.

The lovely spring weather, the lack of busy commute, eating dinner with the family each night, time to read, time to breath, time to watch the birds in the garden. (Although the dawn chorus waking me up at 5am, when I only nodded off at 4am was a bit much this morning.)

I also want to thank lots of companies in my network for doing a great job of providing information and clarity on what government support is available, how it works and the legislative changes being put in place to support us all.

Thanks. Shout out to just a few of the organisations…

Final thought, I wrote this for my husband on our wedding day….it seems it is even more important today.

‘You look after me, encouraged me to be braver, keep me safe, make me smile, help me see things differently and love me unconditionally. I don’t know what I ever did to deserve such happiness and love in my life. But I am so grateful for everything, especially you.’
